Q&A with Valerie of Designs By Val

Q: What is the one stationery item you couldn’t live without?

A: It’s hard to pick just one! My two items would be a calligraphy brush pen and of course greeting cards.

Q: Who are some of your favourite Canadian designers/artists?

A: I love so many designers and I’m constantly inspired by local talent. For greeting cards, I tend to be drawn to designs that have a cute graphic and catchy phrase.

Q: What do you do when you hit a creative roadblock?

A: Work at a coffee shop, go for a walk in the park, head to the library, read blogs, scroll through Instagram. Chocolate also tends to help : )

Q: Name five spots you love to go in your city.

A: I love going to coffee shops and checking out new spots, but I would say that I frequent JJBean on Main Street or Cambie Street for their chocolate Americanos (highly recommend this!), Main Street for all the local shops and cafes, the park near my place has great shaded trails for running and a nice little pond, Stanley Park (a must if you’re visiting Vancouver), and the local library (I love books and magazines, and being here gives me a sense of endless possibilities).

Q: Fill in the blank: Snail mail is…

A: Snail mail is something that makes me smile. There’s something about opening an envelope and seeing what’s inside.

Q: What does your creative space look like?

A: Currently I have two walls with inspirational boards, drawers of card inventory, as well as boxes and boxes of envelopes and packaging goodies.

Designs by Val is a happy little stationery and design studio based in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. Our greeting cards are modern and cheerful, with a bit of whimsy. We hope our designs help connect people with each other, and bring a little joy to the day. Early on in life, owner & designer Valerie Lau soon discovered something she had as much love for as chocolate: arts & crafts. This soon developed into a passion for creating paper goods. When not designing, she can be found at a local eatery, walking around the park, trying to get past page 50 of a novel, or just living what she loves.
